Not only is this one of the disciplines in the 2006 Primal Quest Adventure Race, National Geographic Adventure Magazine lists riverboarding as one of the six sports we'll all be doing in a year. Riverboarding's easy learning curve and its adrenaline factor as compared to kayaking and rafting are reasons why. The design of the RipBoard riverboards provide excellent protection, comfort and bouyancy.
Riverboarding is an awesome way to float rivers lying flat on your stomach on a riverboard and fins on your feet. It's similar to bodyboarding or riding a boogie board except you have a handlebar to hold onto and the board is shaped to protect your upper body down to your hips.
RipBoards are high performance plastic board suitable for river rapids and ocean waves. The ripboard style riverboards have easy grip handles which protect the arms and a padded chest cavity. Its ultra-buoyant design is capable of handling Class V rapids.
No worries about your knees hitting rocks since the board is the lowest point in the water and covers your hips. This enables one to pivot and lift your legs up as needed. In shallow water, a padded wet suit, knee pads or shin guards are helpful as the kicking motion exposes your legs. With a little practice you can avoid most obstacles by steering, timing your kick motion and lifting up your legs when floating over rocks or other obstacles.
Other recommended gear include helmet, pfd, wetsuit and booties. Whitewater experience is extremely helpful and learning from an experienced rider is recommended.
